TOD and TOM - what is it

TOD and TOM are markings that make it clear when you will receive the actual currency in your brokerage account. TOD is an abbreviation for today, which means "today". TOM - respectively, tomorrow, which means "tomorrow". If you have already read the materials on the stock market, perhaps this wording will be clearer for you - TOD is traded in T + 0 mode, and TOM - in T + 1 mode. These are, in principle, full-fledged "currency" analogs of the "stock" designation.

On the stock exchange, for example, it looks like this - USDRUB_TOM. This means that the US dollar - Russian ruble currency pair is being traded, and the currency purchased for this lot will be credited to your account tomorrow. And if there was a _TOD postscript, then the currency would be credited today after the evening clearing at 17:00.

TOD and TOM are not fixed annotations. TOD always turns into TOD the next day, and TOD is transferred to your account immediately after the evening clearing (minus commissions). Some novice currency traders get scared when they see in the trading terminal that the USDRUB_TOМ asset has turned into USDRUB_TOD. This is normal - the times are relative. Towards the end of the article, we will look at how TOM and TOD are displayed in the terminal.

Trading time

Lots marked with TOM and TOD also differ in trading times. TOD trades only until a certain closing time, which is always much earlier than the night's close. The closing time of trading depends on the type of currency. For example, the yuan and the Hong Kong dollar trade until 10:30, the euro until 14:30, and the dollar until 16:45. Please note that some brokers (for example, "FINAM") can change the trading time for TOD lots downward - that is, trading will close earlier than on the Moscow Exchange. This is their right, but it must be remembered and kept in mind. An hour after the close of trading, money begins to be transferred to traders.

TOM is traded until the close of the foreign exchange market at 11:50 pm. It turns into a TOD in the morning and is still available for trading until the close on schedule.

How it is used in practice

It would seem, why bother to arrange this confusion with the withdrawal of currency and the timing of trading? The money would be credited the same evening, everything would be easier. But in fact, this separation is useful for performing various operations.

TOD - currency exchange tool

TOD is a tool that is mainly used not for trading, but for real money exchange without speculation. Let's give an example - you have 73,000 rubles, and you need to convert them into dollars before traveling abroad. You went to the exchange, bought 1000 dollars at a rate of 73 rubles per dollar (approximate rate at the time of this writing) and in the evening, after 17:45, withdrew money from the brokerage account. Longer than in the exchanger, but certainly more profitable.

Traders can also buy TODs - for example, if they need currency to buy foreign stocks or if they urgently need to withdraw their earnings in a specific currency. However, such a need rarely arises.

TOM features

TOM is a useful speculation tool. It trades until the close of the foreign exchange market (11:50 pm), and you will not be out for delivery on the same day. This gives a fairly large field for speculation on a currency that you actually do not have yet (it will be credited only tomorrow), but you can already use it for trading.

For clarity, this can be compared to very short-term futures - instead of trading the stocks he owns, the trader can trade deliverable futures on them. The comparison is not very accurate, but gives a general idea of the benefits of TOM currencies. Thus, having bought TOM currencies, you do not fully own them for about a day (that is, you cannot withdraw them), but you can sell them on the exchange on the same day.

The ability to sell TOM on the same day can be useful not only for speculation. For example, if you do not urgently need to withdraw money, and in the evening you suddenly change your mind, you can simply exchange the currency pair back. It is not a fact that you will remain in the black, but the next day the contents of your account will be in the currency that you need.

Currency trading with leverage

We should also mention leveraged currency trading. On the currency section of the Moscow Exchange, you can buy currency pairs with significant leverage (up to 1:10 and even more). A relatively small fee is charged for the use of borrowed funds, usually covered by the profit from a successful transaction. But trading with leverage in TOM currencies should be done very carefully. The fact is that for the transfer of the leverage to the next day, an additional fee is taken, which is higher than the loan rate.

Terminal display

The main difficulties for most traders are the display of operations with currencies in the trading terminal. Let's consider this using the QUIK terminal as an example.

Here the trader owned a capital of 300,000 rubles and bought 30 lots of USDRUB_TOM. The next day, TOM, as expected, turned into TOD, but there are still a few difficult moments. Why does it have such a huge disadvantage in the table of cash limits, while the table of securities limits displays the currency?

The fact is that until the evening clearing, the trader will not be able to enter the currency into his brokerage account - it will remain in the form of his assets, which can be traded but not used. Therefore, it is displayed below, where all open positions are located. Once cleared, $ 30,000 will be rolled over to cash limits.

Where did the minus on the remainder come from? The trader bought 30 lots of dollars with leverage, but the settlement of the operation has not been completed yet, and in fact the trader spent the broker's money, but did not return it yet.

The difference between TOM and TOD is not that hard to understand. It is enough to understand that these symbols are delivery date markers, and TOM is usually used for speculation. I hope that now it has become a little more comfortable for you to trade currencies and it is clearer for you what is happening on the MICEX.
